My First Yoga Class

Last June my mother signed me up for an eight-week-long yoga class with her and my sister. I had never taken a yoga class before, heck; I didn’t even know what yoga was until our first day. I thought we were going out for frozen yogurt until we showed up at the gym. And as we strolled up to the studio I remember swallowing hard as I saw a group of very limber women stretching before class.

There were colorful yoga mats spread across the floor as we made our way into the room. I found a spot on a green one, my favorite color, as my mom plopped down on an orange mat and my sister a yellow. We were all instructed to take a deep breath as our class got started; I could feel my heart pounding. But by the end of the class I was more at Zen than I could ever remember. I learned quickly that yoga is about your inner peace and not a competition of strength and flexibility.

Yoga Equipment that Helps in the Exercises

Unlike exercises that focus on strengthening parts of the body for health reasons, yoga hopes to achieve the same by way of a different process. Yogis view the mind and body as one. The practice of yoga makes them fitter, more energetic and healthy. It also makes them happier and at peace with the world. Yoga, therefore, is therapeutic in more ways than one.

Yoga can be practiced by anybody using just a yoga mat. However, certain yoga equipment and tools are useful to practitioners. They are designed to provide extra support so he can get deeper into a pose and do it better. Yoga straps are helpful in that they allow the yogi to hold a pose longer. The yoga ball is equipment that will help get the most out of yoga exercises.

The Meaning of Asana Yoga

Yoga first originated in India. Asana yoga is described as the third of the eight limbs of classical yoga. Asanas are the physical movements of yoga practice and, in combination with pranayama or breathing techniques constitute the style of yoga referred to as Hatha Yoga. In the Yoga Sutra, Patanjali describes Asana as a “firm, comfortable posture”, referring specifically to the seated posture, most basic of all the asanas. He further suggests that meditation is the path to transpersonal self-realization.

In this context, Asana refers to two things: the place where a yoga practitioner sits; and the manner in which he sits. In Asana yoga the practitioner is to be seated in a position that is firm but relaxed. In practice, this has expanded beyond the simple sitting posture. Modern usage now includes variations from lying on the back, standing on the head and a variety of other positions. The basic requirement is that the body should be steady and comfortable.

Hold Yoga Poses Better

It takes time to master a yoga pose. It involves a lot of patience and determination. To help you move deeper into pose, consider using yoga straps. These are highly useful for beginners. They allow you to get hold of limbs that you couldn’t reach or hold a pose longer.

Yoga straps are especially useful in bound poses when your hand can’t reach the other hand or when you need to grasp your feet but could not reach it. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t do the pose perfectly on first try. Just persevere and practice regularly to be able to earn the rewards of yoga.

The Simple Needs of Yoga

Is there such a thing as yoga equipment? I was always of the impression that all you need to practice yoga is a piece of sticky mat. This is meant to provide you with a clean space (as opposed to the floor) while providing the hands and feet with some traction. It will also keep you from slipping and sliding as you assume different exercise positions. Well then, if you call mat equipment, then it is yoga equipment.

You will not need a lot when you are practicing yoga. You don’t even need shoes, as everybody goes barefoot. A pair of shorts and a tee shirt is all you will need in terms of apparel. But wait. For some postures you might need blocks and straps to support the head, neck, arms and back. It will be a small investment for the benefits that you will be getting from yoga exercises.

Manduka Yoga Mat – the Excellent Exercise Mat

What benefits can you get from yoga? We read about how yoga practitioners consider the mind as one with the body. In the right environment, there will be harmony of mind and body. This makes the yoga practitioner more aware of body alignments and patterns of movement. For some reason, they are happier and more peaceful.

To people practicing yoga, the yoga mat is an important instrument. A good quality yoga mat will contribute to a pleasant yoga exercise. The Manduka yoga mat is considered an excellent practice mat. The difference is in how it has a top and bottom side. The top side keeps the Yogi from slipping and sliding, the bottom side stays flat against the surface of the floor beneath and doesn’t bunch up during exercise.
